From your Delhi adventures, take a three-hour drive to Agra, the City of Love, and spend the night. A bit of a backstory: its pièce de résistance is the 390-year-old Taj Mahal. This breathtaking “teardrop on the cheek of time” was built to immortalise India’s Mughal ruler Shah Jahal’s love for his wife Mumtaz Mahal. Constructed by 20,000 artisans over 22 years, the Taj Mahal’s pure white marble edifice reaches up to the cerulean sky, seeming to change from white to pink at dusk. It isn’t only Mughal architecture at play here. The sophisticated lines of the Taj Mahal celebrate Persian, Ottoman, and Islamic traditions, as well. Beauty overflows here. And you’ll get to bask in it at sunrise.
A four-hour drive from Agra is Jaipur. This dazzling walled city is one of India’s architectural wonders where ornate royal palaces still stand. It also has an intriguing pinkish hue—every building around you will range in colour from reddish brown to bright pink. They were painted so to welcome Queen Victoria’s husband, Prince Albert, during his tour of India in 1876. One of these rosy wonders is the Hawa Mahal, also known as the Palace of the Winds. From a distance, it looks like a five-level honeycomb with lights. On close inspection, the Hawa Mahal is a luxurious palace that sits on the city edge. Then take an exciting jeep ride to Amer Fort—or Amber Fort, as the British like to call it—which overlooks Maota Lake. Another palace you’ll visit is the Majarajah’s city palace, equally as resplendent as the Hawa Mahal.
Taj Hari Mahal
Your next stop is less than six hours away from Jaipur—Jodhpur, the blue city in the desert. To keep cool, many buildings throughout this city has been painted with a blue hue. Cool off and visit Mehrangarh Fort, where you’ll likely spend many delight-filled moments, sits on a hilltop and is peppered with expansive palaces and intricate architectural details. During the day, tour around Jodhpur’s many bustling bazaars, markets that fill your senses with wonder and the aroma of spices, and warehouses where you can shop to your heart’s delight.
Take a two-hour drive from Jodhpur to the Rajasthan region and check into the Rawla Narlai for the night. Rawla Narlai is a meticulously restored 17th-century royal hunting lodge retreat. This heritage hotel is one of the region’s best-loved, set on the scenic Aravalli Hills. Arrive by mid-afternoon and spend some precious minutes strolling through the manicured grounds and marvelling at this paradise you’ve stumbled upon. Dinner will be epic at Stepwell, a unique hunting lodge that’s over 1,000 years old. They take exquisite care when setting the ambience. You will be dining by candlelight—from 100 candles. How much more romantic and magical can a hunting lodge get?
Your last transfer is less than three hours away: Udaipur. You’ll be spending two nights in an interior designer gem. To describe Udaipur as lavish and striking is an understatement. Rich visual compositions, elaborate details, and diverse materials—all these will be at the forefront of your short tour through this city.
