Elevating the Everyday Elegance
Life is a whirlwind of responsibilities, routines, and the constant buzz of everyday life. Amidst
No matter how far you go, home will always be the place that nurtures you. For me, my home is Australia, no doubt about it. And I can say that with my hand on my heart and my voice steady. Because I’ve lived in places thousands of miles from here. Yet, the pull of Australia—the pull of home—has always been undeniable.
In 2010, my husband was laid off from work. Oh, this unfortunate event took us on a roller coaster ride of emotions, especially since we were parents to two young kids, mortgage interest rates were rising, and Christmas was coming. After we calmed down and took a breath, we realised that there was an opportunity of a lifetime lying in front of us. It would have been a mistake not to take it.
We sold our home, packed up our beautiful daughters, and spent the next year travelling through Europe in a campervan, enjoying the Maltese culture. It was the dream we didn’t know we wanted; needed, even. We wrapped up that amazing year with two months in Bali. If you haven’t known bliss, travel to Bali. That is where they keep it.
Yes, being on the road with young kids did present its share of concerns. Jellyfish stings, language barriers, accidents—all these lived rent-free in my head the whole time we were on our adventure. I didn’t let them stop me or my family, though, from enjoying our rather Bohemian life.
Despite having the time of our lives, though, and experiencing a life we wouldn’t have had anywhere else, I never stopped calling Australia home. And it seemed the universe wanted to remind me of this fact.
Twenty minutes before landing in Malta, the song “I Still Call Australia Home” came over the inflight entertainment. It hit me right in my heart. The lyrics SPOKE to me.
“I’m always traveling
And I love being free
So I keep leaving the sun and the sea
But my heart lies waiting over the foam
I still call Australia home”
I didn’t need any reminding, really. But the tears streaming down my face made sure I’d keep Australia in my heart. They were a celebration of my appreciation for all that Australia has given me and mine. No matter how far I was going from it, I was sure that Australia would always be waiting for me.
So strike for gold, ladies. Manifest your travels without fear. Because Australia’s shores will always welcome you back. In fact, it’s imperative for you to travel, if you can. There is no better teacher than experience. And, oh, let me tell you—there is a world of experience waiting for you to leave your worries behind to follow your dreams in other cultures, other countries.
Coming home will be so much sweeter when you arrive ripe with all the wisdom you’ve gathered in your travels. Australia is a destination in itself. The grass is always green here.
